ACRN Project Technical Community Meeting Minutes - 8/7/2019

Wang, Hongbo
ACRN Project TCM - 7th Aug 2019
Location
Agenda
- ACRN project update
- “Restricting Dynamic Resources from functional safety perspective” by Mao, Junjie
Q1: Are these dynamic resources, variables in ISO 26262 are required?
A1: Depending on the ASIL levels, ASIL-D would suggest “highly recommended” for example.
Q2: Do we have auto tool to scan out any dynamic resource/variables?
A2: For dynamic resources, no such tool but it’s more about design and review stuff.
Q3: What is online checking /testing?
A3: For example, malloc() checking.
Q4: is thermal throttling considered as dynamic resource?
A4: Power control of physical platform is not in ACRN’s current design yet.
- All: Community open discussion.

Date: 8/7
Topic: On
Dynamic Resource Allocation
Description: It is highly recommended in the functional safety standards that dynamic resource allocation and dynamic objects are avoided, but interpretation of this clause may vary. This session will summarize the concepts
in the standards, the rationale of avoiding them in safety-critical applications and possible alternatives, mostly based on the clauses in the standards as well as experiences in safety-critical projects in the past.

ACRN Project Technical Community Meeting Minutes - 7/31/2019

Wang, Hongbo
ACRN Project TCM - 31th July 2019
Location
Agenda
- ACRN project update
- “Design of GOP Driver for GVT-g” by HE, Min
Q1: What’s the life cycle of GOP from power on to Windows desktop showing up?
A1: VM setup -> OVMF loading -> OVMF loads GOP -> OVMF displays on GOP -> OVMF boots Windows -> Windows display through GOP framebuffer -> Windows load GFX driver -> Windows desktop show up.
Q2: What’s the relationship between VideoBIOS and GOP?
A2: Video BIOS is for legacy BIOS and GOP is for UEFI BIOS.
Q3: What’s the overall boot flow sequence of SOS, GVT-g, OVMF, UOS?
A3: SOS booting -> SOS loading GVT-g -> VM setup by hypervisor -> vGPU created by GVT-g -> OVMF loaded in VM -> OVMF loads UOS bootloader -> UOS booting.
Q4: Can current GOP driver design support pass-throughed GPU device besides GVT-g?
A4: No. We may support it in the future if there’s such requirement.
Q5: What’s development environment of GOP driver? In OVMF?
A5: GOP driver is inside of OVMF (actually in EDK2). And it supports development in both Windows and Linux environment.
Q6: Can GOP driver support other Guest OS beyond Windows?
A6: Yes. GOP driver is OS independent.
Q7: Can GOP driver feature co-exist with KVM’s QEMU’s video driver? Any conflict between GOP’s local display and VNC remote display after GOP driver changes upstreamed?
A7: The driver binary can exist in the OVMF of KVM qemu. But they cannot work at the same time. KVM qemu must set up to use either GVT-g’s vGPU or, the Qemu’s emulated video.
- All: Community open discussion.

Re: Dropping Service OS Image from CL
Thanks Miguel for heads up. From ACRN Getting Started Guide, we didn't use "clear-30310-service-os.img.xz" image. It has no impact for ACRN.

Re: Hardware Support (serial port for debugging)

Wang, Hongbo
-
About hardware platform with serial port: We don’t try every off-the-shelf hardware for Apollo Lake and Kabylake CPU. UP2 and NUC7i7DN are just ones we use in our lab, which have serial port jumpers from motherboard. I believe there’re other machines which
have RS232 jumper. For example, Dell desktop machine, Internal evaluation boards from Intel, etc.
-
Without serial port, it’s very difficult to debug ACRN boot phase code. After ACRN successfully boot, you can use “printf” to output debug messages to screen without serial port.
There may be other hardware workaround to support serial port. For specific NUC models, it’s possible to solder down 2 jumpers on motherboard by extending RX/TX singles from M.2 adapter’s pins. But finding a machine with vanilla serial
port is always first option.
Best regards.

Subject: [acrn-users] Hardware Support (serial port for debugging)
Hi, all.
I was wondering that 'UP2' and NUC7i7DN' are only devices supporting serial port to debug ACRN hypervisor?
How can you develop ACRN on the devices without serial port? (like 'NUC7i7BNH')
Thanks.

ACRN Project Technical Community Meeting Minutes: 07/03/2019

Wang, Hongbo
ACRN Project TCM - 3rd July 2019
Location
Agenda
- ACRN project update
Version 1.1 has been released with new features like: Hybrid mode introduced, support for new guest Operating Systems.
- ACRN 2.0 Architecture Sharing by REN, Jack; CHEN, Jason; YIN, Fengwei
Q1: Is it possible to share storage devices in logical partition?
A1: No. The plan for logical partition in ACRN is to use separate storage devices.
Q2: Can you repeat the name of the RTLinux distro that’s popular in China?
A2: Xenomai and Preempt-rt Linux
Q3:How to implement the CAT isolation for Guest VM?
A3: The memory flush instruction from Guest VM will be trapped and emulated, then operate the CAT accordingly, instead of flush all cache.
- All: Community open discussion.
- Next meeting agenda proposal:

[Announce] ACRN Open Source Ver1.1 Release Notes

Wang, Hongbo
Hi all,
We are very pleased to announce
Version 1.1 release of ACRN. You can see the release blog from
https://projectacrn.org/acrn-project-releases-version-1-1/ and detailed Release Notes in website
https://projectacrn.github.io/latest/release_notes.html.
Version 1.1 introduces new Hybrid Mode for ACRN hypervisor and begin to support more Guest OSes, like Zephyr, VxWorks and Windows. In this reference release, we use Clear Linux* as the Service VM and User VM.
Android* and other Linux* based OSes can also be used as a User VM too.
To learn more about ACRN: ACRN is a flexible, lightweight reference hypervisor, built with real-time and safety-criticality in mind, optimized to streamline embedded development through an open source platform. Check out the ACRN project
portal (https://projectacrn.org/) for more information.
Best regards.

Re: NUC8 hardware supported?
Janardhana Rao Vemulapalli <jvemulapalli@...>
Thank you very much Hangbo :). We will try it on NUC7.
Thanks for your interests to ACRN.
We haven’t tried ACRN on laptop but the CPU we have validated is Apollo Lake (SoC) and Kaby Lake (Core). Yes we’re using NUC6CA (APL) and NUC7 (KBL) platform which is easier for debug than laptop.
Best regards.
Hongbo
Can we evaluate ACRN on any laptop?? or it support only NUC hardware??
Please clarify.
Thanks,
VJ Rao.
